First Tizen 3.0 Common milestone release

Tizen Steering Group is pleased to announce the first platform milestone of Tizen 3.0 Common.  As Tizen 2.0 did, Tizen 3.0 Common supports both IA and ARM architectures.  This milestone marks the feature completion for Tizen 3.0 Common. 

Tizen 3.0 Common is a common development / build / test platform for any upcoming features that may be needed by mobile, IVI, wearables, and other profiles. Features integrated in this milestone include:

  • 64-bit support for both Intel and ARM architectures
  • Crosswalk-based web runtime
  • Multiuser support
  • Systemd

Tizen 2.3 Alpha Source Code Release

Tizen 2.3 Alpha source code is available, now including support for the wearable profile. Developers and manufactures may utilize Tizen to their wearable devices based on this source code.

Highlights of this release include, among other improvements:

  • Performance improvement and more lightweight webkit as well as webkit version update
  • BT LE functions for wearable device connectivity such as privacy and peripheral role

The source code for this release is available in Tizen's Git repositories (under the tizen_2.3 branch) and as for OBS project please refer to Tizen:2.3:Wearable project.

In addition, Tizen 2.3 Alpha SDK for wearable application developers will be released soon at Tizen.org.

Tizen Developer Conference 2014 agenda and event highlights

More than a thousand developers and Tizen Platform Contributors will converge on San Francisco to learn about Tizen profiles for Wearables, Consumer Electronics and Automotive during the three-day event.

Tizen Developer Conference today announced its 2014 conference agenda. The San Francisco-based show is taking place from June 2-4 and is expecting over a thousand developers. Hosted and produced by Tizen Technical Steering Group with the support of a number of ecosystem partners, TDC is the world’s largest event focused exclusively on the growing developer ecosystem around Tizen open source operating system for converged devices. This year, TDC’s schedule really illustrates how Tizen is becoming the operating system of everything.

Highlights of this year’s event include:

  • New Product Profiles and Platform Milestones—Developers attending this year’s event will see product demonstrations and presentations on emerging and established product profiles including a new Tizen SDK release for wearables, Tizen for Smart Televisions, and the new Tizen IVI 3.0.

  • The TDC 2014 “Tech Showcase”—A demonstration showcase featuring the latest in commercial Tizen devices, prototypes, reference devices and software demos related to automotive, consumer electronics, wearables, mobile and other “Internet-of-Things” (IoT) related devices.

Tizen SDK for Wearable is a comprehensive set of tools for developing Tizen wearable applications. It consists of Tizen wearable IDE, Emulator, tool-chain, sample applications, and documentation. Tizen SDK for Wearable runs on Windows®, Ubuntu, and Mac OS® X.

Tizen 2.2.1 Compliance Specification and Tests released for Mobile Profile

Tizen Steering Group would like to announce that the official version of Tizen 2.2.1 Compliance Specification (TCS) for Tizen Mobile Profile 2.2.x devices has been published, and the full set of supporting Tizen Compliance Tests (TCT) have been released.  Tizen 2.2.1 TCS & TCT for Mobile Profile are now available at https://source.tizen.org/compliance.

Tizen Compliance Specification provides the requirements necessary for a Tizen mobile device implementation to be Tizen compliant. Detailed steps of the compliance workflow can be found at the link above.

Tizen Compliance Tests are a set of tests that are run against a Tizen mobile device implementation to verify that all the compliance requirements are satisfied. The tests are to be run on an Ubuntu Linux host system which is connected to the mobile device. The tests check all testable compliance requirements and create a detailed report of the results. Any untestable requirements are reported on Tizen branding request form.  Some manual testing is also required.

We invite all Tizen mobile device implementers to become familiar with Tizen Compliance Program.

Tizen 2.2.1 Platform Release

We are pleased to announce that Tizen platform 2.2.1 source code and SDK are now available at https://developer.tizen.org/downloads/sdk.

 

Tizen 2.2.1 contains  new features in privacy control and system framework.

Highlights of this release include:

  • In Settings, the Privacy menu is added
  • Applications can be installed in SD cards
  • Firmware download supports the USB.org framework test tool and Mac OS® X.

Cocos2d-x, others now support Tizen

In case you hadn't heard, Tizen SDK isn't the only way you can produce apps to submit to Tizen Store (or Tizen App Challenge).

Cocos2d-x was recently added as a supported platform, but there are a lot of others as well! Support for Tizen has been announced for a number of products, including Yoyo Games GameMaker: Studio, Appcelerator Titanium 3.0, Project Anarchy from Havok, and many others as well.

Tizen wiki has a useful, community-supported list of alternate ways you can be developing or porting Tizen apps. While not all of the environments listed on Tizen wiki are fully supported today, it's a great place to look for inspiration and to see if your favorite application framework has been added, or if support is in the works.

There are a lot of great options out there for creating an eye-catching app. We're looking forward to seeing what you create!

Tizen 3.0-M2-Aug for IVI Released

In anticipation of Tizen 3.0 release for IVI early next year, Tizen IVI team is pleased to announce that Tizen 3.0-M2-Aug for In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) was released on August 29th.

This new preview features an upgraded Wayland (1.2), weston compositor (1.2.1) and is based on a 3.11 Linux kernel. It comes with an enhanced Tizen Web RunTime (WRT), featuring new Web APIs (Automotive, Speech, DLNA). The Resource Policy Manager (Murphy), Automotive Message Broker, Hands-Free Dialer, MediaPlayer, and many more packages have been upgraded and new middleware components have been added, such as a new PIM manager (SyncEvolution), a speech-recognition framework, SmartDeviceLink, and basic support for Ethernet AVB.

A new automotive HomeScreen is under development and can be installed separately. Refer to the release notes for more details.
